Just to solve this problem ...
*You must have 1.2.4 version
*You must use repair from blizzard site

If all fails ..

tell me if you what error gives to you (exactly) when occours , just before choosing char or after it .

admin will do :
.broadcast SERVER RESTARTING ...
shut down
Code:
sed -i -e s/SKIN=19/SKIN=6/g players.save (skin 19 is bugged)

startup the server ...
