Installation guide

Here you can find info on how to install jLibrary server and client packages.

Client install

jLibrary DMS packages come with an HypersonicSQL database bundled. So you can use it locally without the needing of a database installed at your PC. Here are the steps needed to install jLibrary for a local use.

  1. First, you have to download latest client package. You can find it at http://www.javahispano.net/projects/jlibrary
  2. Download the .tar.gz client package and uncompress it in a directory at your hard disk. By default jLibrary client bundle come with a /jlibrary-client directory created.
  3. Execute the binary file for your platform client distribution. For example in linux platforms you should execute ./jlibrary

Server install

jLibrary DMS server packages come configured to use a MySQL database by default with an admin user called martin :). I suppose that this isn't suitable for your use at your entreprise, so don't forget to see the next point to find how to use a different database or how to configure your MySQL to use another user.

To install jLibrary DMS server you have to perform the following steps:

  1. First, you have to download latest server package. You can find it at http://www.javahispano.net/projects/jlibrary
  2. Download the .tar.gz server package and uncompress it in a directory at your hard disk. By default jLibrary server bundle come with a /jlibrary-server directory created.
  3. jLibrary DMS is a tomcat based server, and comes with Tomcat 5.0 bundled. To start jLibrary DMS server you only have to go to bin directory and execute the script for your platform. For example in Linux you should execute ./startup.sh

    Be sure that you have configured your database correctly before starting the server.

    You can stop jLibrary DMS server using the scripts in bin directory. For example to stop jLibrary server on Linux platforms you should execute ./shutdown.sh
  4. jLibrary DMS server installas at 8080 port. You can ensure that jLibrary DMS server is working by checking the wsdl descriptors at http://localhost:8080/axis.

    You can install jLibrary DMS server in other ports, or in another ways by tuning Tomcat configuration files.

Remember that when you execute a jLibrary server it will be accesible from your jlibrary client using a jLibrary:// based URL. For example jLibrary://localhost:8080

Using a different database

Note that this info is only intended for advanced users: If you want to use jLibrary DMS against your own database, for example MySQL or Oracle, you have to perform additional steps:

  1. If you want that the client to use another database then go to jLibrary client installation directory and open the jlibrary-client.jar at /JLIBRARY_CLIENT_INSTALL_DIRECTORY/plugins/org.jlibrary.client_3.0.0

    If you want that your server to use another database then go to jLibrary server installation directory at /JLIBRARY_SERVER_INSTALL_DIRECTORY/webapps\axis\WEB-INF\classes
  2. Open the database.properties file with your preferred editor
  3. Choose your preferred database from those that appear commented in the file. Uncomment the lines of your preferred database and comment the active database lines. jLibrary uses the information in this file to load JDBC drivers. Theorically is factible to add new databases by entering JDBC driver info and adding the driver .jar file to the jlibrary-client.jar plugin.

    Here is an example of the entries in database.properties file:

    jlibrary.sql.schema=org/jlibrary/core/persistence/data/MySQL-schema.sql
    jlibrary.driver.username=martin
    jlibrary.driver.password=
    jlibrary.driver.name=org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver
    jlibrary.driver.url=jdbc:mysql://localhost/jlibrary
    #jlibrary.autostart=true

    When you use an external database, you must to comment jlibrary.autostart option or at least set it to false. This option makes that jLibrary tries to start itself the database engine and currently, jLibrary DMS only supports this option for HypersonicSQL.

    Another thing you should care is the jlibrary.sql.schema property. This property tells jLibrary DMS where he can find the sql schema for creating the jLibrary DMS internal database. When using a database not supported you should create an sql schema and add it to the jlibrary-client.jar
